This course is the story of civilization - that is, the story of when, how, and why people started living together in big, settled groups (a.k.a., cities), and how they learned to deal with the problems that arose as a result. We'll look at the rise of civilization in a particular part of the world - in and around the Mediterranean basin. From the Neolithic Transition to the Rise of Christianity, this story will look at the events, literature, science, governments, arts, and religions of the people who lived in the Mediterranean region from approximately 10,000 BCE until 650 CE.
